The Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) allows 18-30 year old university-educated Australians and Argentines to work, study and holiday in the respective countries during a 12 month period.
"Work and holiday agreements allow young people to immerse themselves in a new and different cultural experience while also fostering wider economic ties and dialogue between governments," said Australian minister for immigration and citizenship, Chris Bowen, at a signing ceremony with聽the Argentine Ambassador, Pedro Villagra Delgado, in Canberra.
Argentina joins eight other countries who participate in the scheme with Australia, including Bangladesh, Turkey, Thailand, the US, Chile, Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.
The Work and Holiday visa differs from the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) as it requires applicants to have the support of their government, hold or be studying towards tertiary qualifications and to speak functional English.
Participants are allowed to work with one employer for up to six months with the visa and must not exceed four months studying with any institution.
It is hoped the deal will strengthen economic and cultural ties between Australia and Argentina.
"This agreement reinforces our mutually beneficial relationship with Argentina, which is based on shared interests, greater economic cooperation, and growing trade and tourism links," Bowen said.
Governments from each country have placed an annual limit of 500 visas under the scheme.
